Breakfast : I’m beginning to notice a bit of a theme…my days tend to start with some sort of chocolate treat. I would like to clarify, though, that I didn’t eat the entire thing this morning. I found this in my stocking on Christmas morning, and forgot about it until I went home last weekend. I ate about 3/4 of it then, wrapped up the rest and stuck in my purse for later…which turned out to be this morning. Cookies and cream flavor…delicious. Oh, fun fact: Cadbury chocolate sold in the US is made by Hershey’s, and it’s not nearly as good as the stuff they sell in the UK.

Lunch and Snack : Cheeseburgers for lunch today. Today I refilled my water bottle from one of the drink dispensers by the buffet (they’re always filled w/ water, tea, and two kinds of lemonade) instead of the sink, so my water had a subtle hint of lemon. The PopTarts on the right served as my snack during seminar (but I only ate a little bit then b/c the cheeseburger was surprisingly filling) and later on as part of my dinner; baked tilapia was on the menu, and I’m not to crazy about fish. Fortunately for me, one of my sisters stopped by my room and asked if I wanted to join her on a…

WalMart Run - $16.25 : So convenient and cheap, at least compared to the other options open to college students in Greencastle who have rely on transport friends and sorority sisters to get anywhere farther than the edge of campus in a timely fashion. And I really did need more laundry detergent, and something other than PopTarts, omlettes or Ramens for dinner, so spending money in this instance is completely justified. Still, it’s hard not to wonder what my savings probably cost somebody else.

Birthday Cake : One of my sisters had a birthday, and her mom sent the house a cake to celebrate. This was all that was left of it about an hour and a half after Emily made the first cut. It was all chocolate and icing and tasted like it had no nutritional value whatsoever. I loved it : ) I did feel a bit guilty for using a plastic disposable fork and small styrofoam plate to eat it, though. I should’ve gone to the kitchen and gotten one of the silverware forks, or at least one of the paper plates…come to think of it, I use a lot of those paper plates…at least three each day. We’ve talked to our House Mom about switching to completely biodegradable disposable dishes, but apparently there’s too expensive.

Dinner: Before & After : I’ve been craving Indian food for a while now, so I was happy that the Amy’s Palak Paneer was on sale. Allegedly all-organic and super healthy, it was spicy in a way that was flavorful but not scorching. It went perfectly with half a glass of milk and the usual tea.

Breakfast & Inspiration : Since I stayed up rather late last night, I had some trouble convincing myself that I needed to get up and out of my very warm and comfortable bed. Hearing the hail knocking against the window and realizing that I didn’t have decent survival shoes handy should a tornado strike eventually did the trick. I went to my room and grabbed one of the little Dove chocolates I keep with a stash of assorted candies on my dresser. In addition to being a caffeine addict, I also have a serious dependency on theobromine. But I like the Dove chocolates because they have inspiring little messages printed on the inside of the foil. Today, it said “Satisfy your sense of surprise. Love, Dove.” Believe me, I know it’s all just a sappy marketing ploy catering to socially perceived notion that women need encouragement and empowerment via the pampering power of chocolates wrapped in seductive read colors…but I don’t really care. It makes me happy.

TACO TUESDAY!!!!!! : A time-honored Delta Gamma tradition - every Tuesday lunch consists of a taco bar. Since I woke up late and didn’t get down to the kitchen until after Char and the cute waiter from Phi Psi had already put most of the food away. Still, I scrounged together some refried beans, chicken, spinach, and shredded cheese. I wanted sour cream, but I couldn’t find it and didn’t want to bother Char by poking around the kitchen even more than I already was, so I just let it be. It was still quite good.

Latte & Scone - $5.28 : After lunch I had to run some more errands - yay for depositing paychecks! - and once again didn’t have time to get back to the house for a snack before class. So much for money-saving determination. So again with the scone and latte (they were out of white chocolate raspberry so I had to make do with blueberry…tough, I know) but this time it was actually cheaper by 37 cents. This struck me a rather strange. Yesterday I’d gotten a small latte with a double shot of espresso; today I got a medium latte, which also had two shots of espresso but more milk…and yet it was cheaper than the small. Weird. Anyway, I also added two packages of the “Sugar in the Raw” sugar; it looked more natural and appealing.

Refilled Water Bottle : I know, drinking water from disposable bottles is not environmentally friendly, and drinking one from Nestle makes the situation even more despicable. But I figure that it evens out morally for two reasons: one, my mother made me buy a huge pack of water bottles before the ice storm in February - going against a direct parental order isn’t advisable for survival, and even though I didn’t end up needing the water bottles to survive I can’t very well let them go to waste. Two, I make a habit of refilling the disposable bottles several times before consigning them to the recycle bin.

1 Stick of Gum : After the coffee and scone, breath management became necessary. Enter the last stick of this pack of Icebreaker’s gum that I’ve been carrying around in my pencil case for the past couple of weeks.

Peppermint : My breath was still minty fresh from the gum, but these were free in the ARC. It is a sin to pass up free food, esp. in college; we’ll likely never experience such an outpouring of free nourishment again…well, maybe it’s not technically “free” since most of it’s paid for by tuition and student fees and such, but it seems free, and is therefore alluring.

W Center Forms : I need one of each of these forms per appointment in the W Center; the yellow one to document the student’s visit, and the green one for the student to evaluate me. I only had one appointment today, so I gave the two extra forms to another tutor. Not pictured, I also loaned one of my sorority sisters who came in for an appointment $2 so that she could top off her print account.

Cinnamon Snack : When I got home from work my roommate informed me that bad weather was quickly approaching, so I decided to put off making dinner and take my shower before the lightning started. But since I was hungry I grabbed a couple of these (they belong to my other roommate). They’re reaaaaaally good…but on second thought the ridiculously long freshness date makes me wonder what kind of preservatives lace these supposedly bakery-fresh products.

Dinner: Before & After : Speaking of preservatives…this is my dinner, which I finally got around to making after all the Tornado warnings had died down and I could use the kitchen in relative safety. I opted for Ramens from the ample stash hidden in the depths of my closet. I’m quite particular about this dish; like my tea, it has to be made a certain way. For one thing, I absolutely cannot stand it as a soup; I throw the nasty flavor packet away as soon as I open the package, and I drain the noodles (and rinse them, usually, to get rid of some of the fat) after they’ve boiled for at least 4 minutes (but preferably longer). Once they’re done, I mix in a little salt, butter, and cottage cheese. Add to that my ubiquitous cuppa tea. Not exactly what you’d call a high-on-nutrition meal, but it’s extremely tasty, and not quite as dangerous as usual since I don’t use the poison Maruchan calls flavoring. Delicious…but I really need to stop missing dinner, and start eating before 11:30 pm…I’ve heard that such habits are conducive to health and such

And so ends Day #2. I spent more money than I would have liked, but I figure that at least I made a deposit into my checking account beforehand, and learned that a medium latte with two shots of espresso is cheaper than a small latte with a double shot. Plus, my sorority sister will pay me back; I do know where she lives.

So, one of the assignments for my Anthropology of Development...

Lunch: Cincinnati Chili w/ Iced Tea

Latte & Scone from Café Roy: $5.63

Cake!

Ice Cream with Staci: $4.42

Late Supper - Omlette & Tea

So, one of the assignments for my Anthropology of Development class this semester is to keep a photo or video diary of absolutely everything that I purchase over the course of the week, and write a few lines with each picture/video about the emotional and social contexts in which the purchases are made. The point of the exercise is to explore personal patterns of consumption, and then situate them in wider local and/or global contexts. The fact that I live in a sorority house and consequently don’t have to actually undergo a monetary transaction every day in order to purchase my basic meals is of no matter, I’m still going to record everything so….be prepared for lots of pictures of snacks. And I mean lots. I’m a snack person.

Now that you have the background info, onto PhotoDiary Day #1: Monday, April 18, 2011.

Lunch: Cincinnati Chili w/ Iced Tea: I woke up late, as per usual. By the time I got dressed and ready to go for the day, lunch was already set up, so I decided to bypass breakfast entirely. Char, our wonderful day cook, had made Cincinnati Chili, which is basically chili mixed with spaghetti and topped with sour cream, salsa, and shredded cheddar cheese. Today, though, Char had kept the spaghetti separate from the rest of the chili, which made me very happy - I don’t like my noodles to be swimming in sauce; the mixture has to be just right. I topped it off with some sour cream and shredded cheese, bypassing the salsa because, let’s face it, mixing chili and salsa is gross. In my opinion. I had a glass of iced tea as well. Cornbread was also on the menu, but I didn’t take any. This brand comes out of a saran-wrapped cardboard box from lord-knows where, and my Mom’s homemade version has spoiled me.

Latte and Scone from Café Roy : Although lunch was delicious, it wasn’t long until I needed more food and caffeine, stat. I didn’t have enough time between meeting with my thesis advisor and running errands to go back to the house for a snack before lit. seminar, so I stopped by the library cafe for a pick-me-up. I originally intended to grab the latte - with a double shot of espresso, of course - and then run next door to the ARC in Asbury to pick up a bag of chips (snacks from the ARC are waaaaaaay cheaper…25 cents a pop) but the scones proved to be entirely too tempting; white chocolate raspberry is my favorite. While I was in line I actually ran into my professor; walking to class, we sipped coffee and had a lovely debate about Judith Butler’s conception of social constructivism as it applied to Nella Larsen’s novella, Passing. Hooray for intellectual engagement outside of the classroom!

Cake! : I covered a couple of extra shifts at the W center for a friend, so I missed dinner at the house. As a result, I was a bit hungry and grumpy. I texted one of my roommates to see if she wanted to grab Vegan burgers in the Hub; she’d already eaten, but she’d just gotten done babysitting a very naughty three-year-old, and <strike>desperately needed the healing powers of</strike> wanted some ice cream. I ran by the house to drop off my stuff before going to Dairy Castle, and found the gorgeous leftover dessert in the kitchen. I ate one piece then, and snuck another one a couple of hours later.

Ice Cream with Staci : Dairy Castle…note the look of joy on Staci’s face as she holds our ice creams so I can take a picture. She got pineapple orange ice cream in a regular cone, and I got “Birthday Cake” flavor in a waffle cone. If you can’t tell, I’m rather fond of cake. Also, the ice cream had sprinkles! Hunger and bad mood, consider yourselves banished.

Late Supper - Omlette and Tea : After the cake and ice cream, I didn’t really get hungry until about 11 or so. I didn’t want the leftover chicken in the fridge, so I made a three-egg omlette with sliced tomatos, spinach leaves I picked out of the communal salad bowl, and three different kinds of cheese: feta, mozzarella and cheddar. It doesn’t look like much in the picture, but it was quite delicious (after I nuked it in the microwave because it hadn’t cooked all the way through…). I also had a cup of tea, proper tea: brewed from water boiled in a singing kettle that is then poured over the bag so that it puffs up like a balloon and allowed to steep for at least five minutes, then mixed with two packs of sugar and a bit of milk from the giant milk machine in the kitchen (I’ll show you a picture later, it’s AMAZING…seriously, it is. Not kidding).

And that was my day. I spent a total of $10.05 outside of my prepaid house meal-plan…ouch. Tomorrow the snacks will come from home, methinks. Now it is time for bed.

So, I haven’t posted on tumblr in ages. I blame my thesis, which - despite my best efforts...

So, I haven’t posted on tumblr in ages. I blame my thesis, which - despite my best efforts...

Thesis...

I know that it will all be over soon, that in five days I’ll be free. Still, a little part of...

Historical Figures Win
